Article Writing & Content Creation for SEO

October 31st, 2008 by Rob

I received this question about building links and I’ve posted my answer below:

“Hi Rob,

One of my ideas for traffic generation is to write a series of blogs all pointing back to the main site sales page. i.e. Google will consider the backlinks as high-quality as they come from content-similar sites, so sales page will get ‘natural’ higher rankings.

However… Am I right in thinking that Google watches out for repeated content? So, for example, if I had the same article/blog-post on several sites Google would penalise me because it sees repeated content?

Just wanted to clarify this with someone in the know!

Thanks,
Michael”

Here’s my reply:

“Hi Michael,

Your thinking on this is spot on - the best kind of external links (a.k.a. backlinks) to get for your main page for organic search engine rankings on Google is from sites with similar content, and to take it a step further, you want the keyword anchor text that links to your site/page to be for the keyword you want to rank for (i.e. ‘cell phones’ should be the keyword phrase hyperlinked to your sales page about cell phones, etc.)

Now, you DO want to vary these keyword anchor text links - you don’t want 100% of them to all be for the same keyword phrase, so you should use SEPS variations (Search Engine Proven Synonyms, as determined by doing a ’tilde’ search in Google like this:

~”cell phones”
or
~cell ~phones

and noting all of the terms that appear in BOLD in the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages). Make SOME of your backlinks for these SEPS variations too.

That being said, the content that is posted to these external sites that will contain these backlinks has to be at least 30% unique to other variations posted on other sites. If you simply paste the same piece of content over and over, Google will discount all but the first one and you won’t benefit from the rest of it.

Google DOES penalize for ‘duplicate content’ because Google doesn’t feel it is prudent or a good use of resources to index the same content that might appear in multiple places around the internet. To conserve storage space (and for other algorithmic reasons), Google will generally only index a piece of content that appears unique.

To accomplish creating variations that are at least 30% different from each other, you can do 1 of several things:

1) Write your article/content once, and then rewrite it multiple times, changing the Title, Intro Paragraph, and/or a few sentences throughout the body of the article each time to produce a relatively unique piece of content to post on the next site.

2) Pay a ghostwriter to create variations for you

3) Use an ‘article spinning’ site to produce these article variations.

I created my own article writing software site called ArticleJockey.com that will ALSO spin your content. The site is free to use, except the spinning feature works off a ‘credits’ system. Everyone should be using the free part of ArticleJockey.com to create their content for SEO reasons (ArticleJockey.com gives you the list of keywords to use, shows you how to balance those keywords throughout your article, etc.).

To be honest, the method that ArticleJockey.com employs to create ’spun’ versions of your article is by the ’synonym substitution’ method, which isn’t the best way to do it. And you still have the problem of how to actually get these variations of your article posted around the internet.

So, I discovered another site (not mine, but I became an affiliate of this site because it kicks butt) that does the article spinning in the best way possible AND posts the article around the internet in its various forms automatically for you - this is by far one of the BEST things out there for building massive backlinks to your site. I use ArticleJockey to create the original article so it is SEO-optimized, then I use this site to create spun versions and get them distributed across the internet:

Now, if you don’t want to pay for things like this, I developed a method of building massive, high-quality backlinks to a site using blogs, etc. which I document on this page here:

The above strategy uses free blog accounts, a service called ‘Clipmarks’ and some special software I developed to track the link building (not yet released).

I hope that answers your question!
